Hello, Sydney cat lovers! Planning a holiday or juggling a hectic schedule? You’re likely wondering how to ensure your feline friend is well cared for while you’re away. Should you hire cat sitters in Sydney to visit your home, or is boarding for cats at a professional facility like Lions Den Cat Hotel Sydney the better option? As the cat boarding arm of Southern Cross Vet in Surry Hills, Sydney, we’re committed to providing exceptional care for your cat. In this blog, we’ll compare cat sitting and cat boarding, showing why Lions Den is the ideal choice for your cat’s comfort and your peace of mind.

Understanding Cat Sitting Options

Are Cat Sitters a Suitable Choice?

Hiring cat sitters in Sydney can be a practical solution for some pet owners. A pet sitter visits your home to feed your cat, clean the litter box, and provide brief companionship, allowing your cat to stay in a familiar environment. This can work well for cats who are particularly attached to their surroundings or sensitive to change. Additionally, having a sitter check your home offers an extra layer of security.

However, cat sitting has its limitations. Most pet sitters in Sydney visit only once or twice daily for short periods, which may not provide enough interaction for social cats. If your cat has specific health needs, a sitter may lack the expertise to address them properly. Finding reliable cat sitters in Sydney requires thorough research, as not all services offer consistent, high-quality care.

What Are the Red Flags in a Pet Sitter?

When choosing a pet sitter in Sydney, watch for potential warning signs. Poor communication, such as infrequent or unclear updates, can indicate unreliability. A lack of reviews or references may suggest limited experience. If a sitter seems unfamiliar with cat behavior or medical needs, they may not deliver the care your cat deserves. Inconsistent or rushed visits can also leave your cat feeling neglected.

The Advantages of Cat Boarding

How Do Cats Fare in a Boarding Environment?

Boarding for cats at Lions Den Cat Hotel Sydney offers a tailored, enriching experience. Located above Southern Cross Vet in Surry Hills, our facility is staffed by a dedicated team, including our full-time kennel hand, Anna, who ensures your cat receives personalized attention. Each cat enjoys a private two-story suite with separate areas for eating, litter, and lounging, plus supervised access to a spacious play area with cat towers, toys, and cozy hideaways.

Most cats adapt quickly to our boarding environment, typically settling in within a day. We provide premium Royal Canin food and comfortable bedding with plush towels, pillows, and quilts. Our complimentary health checks, conducted by our veterinary team before boarding begins, ensure your cat is in top health. To keep you connected, we send regular photo updates and offer FaceTime calls upon request.

Ready to give your cat a luxurious boarding experience? Contact us at (02) 9699 3951 to speak with our friendly team and book your cat’s stay at Lions Den Cat Hotel Sydney.

Is Boarding Stressful for Cats?

Some cats may feel a touch of stress when adjusting to a new place, but a well-run cattery like Lions Den minimizes this. Our private suites offer a secure space, and our play area keeps cats engaged. Research shows that environmental enrichment, like toys and climbing structures, helps cats adapt quickly to boarding by reducing stress-related behaviors (Stella et al., 2013). Our team, with veterinary expertise, keeps a close eye on your cat to ensure their comfort.

Will My Cat Be Okay in a Cattery for Two Weeks?

Absolutely, your cat will thrive at Lions Den for a two-week stay. Our thoughtfully designed suites, engaging play area, and attentive care from Anna and our team create a home-like environment. Regular photo updates keep you informed, allowing you to relax knowing your cat is content. Whether it’s a short trip or a longer absence, Lions Den is the ideal choice.

Ensure your cat’s comfort during your two-week trip. Call (02) 9699 3951 or visit our facilities page to reserve a spot at Lions Den Cat Hotel Sydney.

How Long Can Cats Stay in a Cattery?

Cats can comfortably stay at Lions Den for periods ranging from a weekend to several weeks. Our suites and play area keep cats engaged, while our team provides continuous care. For longer stays, we offer photo updates and FaceTime calls to maintain your connection with your pet, giving you confidence in their well-being.

Choosing the Best Care for Your Cat

Is It Better to Board Cats or Leave Them at Home?

Deciding between boarding and hiring a sitter depends on your cat’s needs, but boarding at Lions Den offers significant advantages. While a sitter allows your cat to stay home, their brief visits may not provide enough interaction or oversight, especially for cats with health concerns. Boarding for cats at Lions Den ensures 24/7 care, veterinary expertise, and a stimulating environment. Our convenient pick-up and drop-off service, available for a nominal fee, is perfect for busy Sydney pet owners looking to avoid traffic or scheduling conflicts.

Unlike cat sitting, which relies on short check-ins, Lions Den provides a secure, cat-focused setting. Curious about our setup? Take a look at our video tour to see why pet owners choose us.

Are There Downsides to Pet Boarding?

Pet boarding may involve a brief adjustment period for some cats and can be slightly more expensive than hiring a sitter. However, at Lions Den, we address these concerns with exceptional care, comfortable accommodations, and professional oversight, making boarding a worry-free choice.

How to Find the Right Cat Care?

Finding reliable cat care in Sydney requires careful consideration. For sitters, seek recommendations from friends or check online reviews. For boarding, choose a facility with a strong reputation, like Lions Den. Our Google reviews highlight why pet owners trust us. You can also explore our blog for pet care tips or visit our facilities page to learn more about our offerings.

Why Lions Den is Your Cat’s Home Away from Home

When it comes to boarding cats, Lions Den Cat Hotel Sydney stands out as the premier choice. Located above Southern Cross Vet, our facility combines professional care with a welcoming environment. Anna, our full-time kennel hand, provides dedicated attention, while our two-story suites and expansive play area keep your cat comfortable and entertained. Senior cats, with their slower pace and gentle demeanour, hold a special place in our hearts. However, their advancing years bring unique needs. At Southern Cross Veterinary Clinic’s The Lion’s Den, we understand how important it is to provide tailored care for senior cats. Whether they’re enjoying a luxurious stay with us or basking in the comfort of your home, a little extra attention can make their golden years truly wonderful.

What Is Considered Old Age for Cats?

Cats are considered senior around the age of seven to ten years, with some reaching their geriatric phase by fifteen. Aging can vary depending on the breed and overall health, but once they hit their senior years, you may notice subtle changes. They might not be as playful as before or take longer naps in the sun. Despite these differences, the essence of what they need—love, comfort, and a safe environment—remains the same.

Are Senior Cats Hard to Take Care Of?

Many people worry that caring for senior cats is complicated, but it’s not as challenging as it may seem. While you may need to adjust certain routines or provide a little extra care, the bond you share with your cat will grow even stronger. The key to keeping your senior cat healthy and happy lies in understanding their changing needs and adapting accordingly.

Health Care for Senior Cats

Why Regular Veterinary Checkups Are Crucial

Cats, like humans, experience natural changes in their bodies as they age. They might develop conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, or hyperthyroidism, which are more common in older cats. Regular veterinary checkups become crucial during this stage. Aim for at least one annual visit, or twice a year if possible. These checkups allow your vet to identify and treat potential health issues early, giving your cat the best chance at a long and comfortable life.

Nutrition for Senior Cats

Diet is another important aspect of senior cat care. Older cats often have specific nutritional needs. They may require food that is easier to digest, higher in protein, or enriched with nutrients that support joint health and kidney function. It’s worth discussing dietary options with your veterinarian to ensure your cat is getting the best possible nutrition. Providing fresh water throughout the day is equally vital. Senior cats can become dehydrated more easily, so ensuring they always have access to clean water is critical. Consider placing water bowls in multiple locations around your home or investing in a pet fountain to encourage drinking.

Creating a Comfortable Home for Your Senior Cat

Adjusting for Mobility Issues

Mobility can become an issue for senior cats. Arthritis or general stiffness may make it difficult for them to jump or climb. Creating a more accessible environment can significantly enhance their quality of life. Provide soft, low-access resting spots where they can relax without having to exert themselves. If they enjoy higher perches, adding ramps or steps can make climbing easier and safer.

Keeping the Litter Box Accessible

The litter box is another area where adjustments may be necessary. As cats age, they might struggle to use litter boxes with high sides. Switching to a box with lower entry points can help, as can placing boxes in easily accessible, quiet areas. If your cat seems reluctant to use the litter box or starts having accidents, it could be a sign of discomfort or a medical issue. Don’t hesitate to consult your veterinarian if you notice such changes.

How to Recognize and Address Discomfort in Senior Cats

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, but paying attention to their habits can help you spot potential problems. Behavioral changes can often signal that your senior cat needs extra care.

Signs Your Cat Might Be in Pain

If you notice these signs, consult your veterinarian promptly. Early intervention can make a significant difference in managing your cat’s comfort and well-being.

Keeping Your Senior Cat Happy and Engaged

Provide Mental Stimulation

Creating a comfortable and stimulating environment for your senior cat is essential. They still need mental stimulation to keep their minds sharp. Interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and gentle play sessions can be great ways to engage them. Even if they’re less active than they used to be, activities like these can help maintain their cognitive function and keep them happy. Strategically placing a bird feeder near a window can provide endless entertainment, turning bird-watching into a favorite pastime for your cat.

Regular Grooming

Grooming is another area where senior cats may need a helping hand. As they age, they may struggle to maintain their coats due to stiffness or reduced flexibility. Regular brushing not only keeps their fur in good condition but also provides an opportunity to check for any unusual lumps, bumps, or skin changes. Brushing sessions can also be a bonding experience, allowing you to spend quality time together.

A Quiet and Cozy Space

Older cats often appreciate more solitude and less noise, so having a dedicated area where they can retreat can help them feel secure. Soft blankets, cozy beds, and warm spots near a sunny window or a gentle heat source can make all the difference.

Pain Management and Routine

If your senior cat experiences pain, such as from arthritis or other conditions, it’s essential to manage it effectively. Speak with your veterinarian about appropriate pain relief options, which might include medications or supplements designed to improve joint health. Pain management can dramatically improve their quality of life, allowing them to move and rest more comfortably.

Maintaining a sense of routine is equally important. Cats thrive on consistency, and a regular schedule can help regulate their digestion and provide a sense of stability. Try to keep mealtimes and playtimes consistent, even as their activity levels change.

While dogs as pets are often lauded for their ability to encourage exercise and social interaction, studies suggest that owning a cat can also have a positive impact on both our physical and mental health. At The Lion’s Den, Southern Cross Veterinary Clinic Sydney’s premium cat boarding service, we know that sharing your life with a feline friend can have a profound impact on both physical and mental health.

Absolutely! Owning a cat as a pet can have a positive impact on both physical and mental health. Whether you want to reduce stress, improve your mood, or simply enjoy companionship, cats make wonderful pets.

Studies have shown that cat owners experience increased happiness and satisfaction in their daily lives. Cat companionship and affection can release endorphins, also known as “feel-good” hormones, which elevate mood and reduce stress levels. Simply petting a cat can lower blood pressure and heart rate, promoting relaxation and calmness.

Interacting with cats encourages physical activity through play, promoting a healthier lifestyle. Furthermore, growing up in households with cats may lower the risk of developing allergies and asthma in children, showcasing the multifaceted advantages of cat ownership for overall well-being.

Owning a cat can profoundly impact mental and emotional well-being. One of the key psychological benefits is companionship. Cats, while often independent, provide steady social support, offering affection, playfulness, or just their presence. This can significantly reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, especially for individuals living alone or experiencing social difficulties. Simply having a cat around to talk to or cuddle can help create a sense of connection and comfort.

Emotional support is another major benefit. The bond between cats and their owners can provide comfort in times of stress, anxiety, or depression. Cats are sensitive to their owner’s moods, and their calm, rhythmic purring can even have a therapeutic, soothing effect. This connection can make managing mental health issues more bearable by offering constant, non-judgmental support.

Finally, cat ownership fosters a sense of responsibility. Caring for a cat—feeding, grooming, and attending to their needs—can teach both children and adults valuable life lessons in accountability and empathy. Understanding the needs of another living being enhances emotional intelligence and encourages daily routines that can help structure a person’s life. For many, this responsibility can lead to a deeper sense of purpose, improving overall psychological health.

How Cats Affect Human Health

Cats have a unique ability to sense their owner’s emotions, providing comfort and solace when needed. Playing with cats or simply watching them play can brighten up your day and improve your mood. Moreover, the physical activity associated with cat care, such as cleaning the litter box or engaging in play, can contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

When you bring your furry friend home with you for the first time, you want to know that you’re doing everything right by them. But, if you are a new cat or kitten owner, it can be difficult to know what’s best for them. Owning a cat might seem simple, you just feed it and water it and make sure it’s safe. But it isn’t always that easy, and if you are a new cat or kitten owner, there are a few things you should know that will make your job easier.

1. How Much Time Do You Have?

Cats are usually portrayed as independent, aloof creatures that don’t need anything from anyone. However, while they are more independent then dogs, they do need care, particularly when they’re young. So, if you’re out all day, then a cat probably isn’t the pet for you. Unless, of course, you like coming home to scratched up furniture, an angry cat, and ‘gifts’ all over the floor.

2. Do an Allergy Check

Have you been around cats before? If you’ve never spent a lot of time around them, you might want to do an allergy check first. There’s nothing worse than getting your new pet home and realising they make you sneeze and itch. And not everyone reacts to cats immediately either. It can take a while for the symptoms to show. If you have a mild reaction but still want to buy a kitten, the ask your vet or pet store owner about low allergen cat breeds.

3. Shop First

Before you bring your new cat home, go shopping. Buy everything you think you’ll need or want to make your cat comfortable and to make them feel at home. The last thing you want is to have your kitten going to the toilet around your house because you forgot the kitty litter. Having toys and blankets that are just theirs will also make your kitten feel more at home in their new space.

4. Plan a Quiet First Day

When you first bring your kitten home, it’s natural for you and everyone in your family to be excited. This may overwhelm or terrify your new kitten, who is away from their home, their mother, or their siblings for the first time. Instead, try to keep the first day low key. Don’t plan any big activities and let your kitten guide what you do. This will help everyone settle down quicker and easier.

5. Pet Proof

Cats are like small children and babies, particularly when you first get them home, so prepare accordingly. Before you bring your kitten home, make sure high windows are closed, check for escape routes, and move or secure anything that could end up hurting your kitten. Remember that they will be jumping, exploring, and digging into everything, so make sure it’s safe for them to do so.

6. Plan your Kitten’s Diet

Before you bring your kitten home, make sure that you know what they’re going to eat and have a few day’s supply. If you’re unsure, talk to your vet about the best pet food for your new friend to ensure that you get balanced, age-appropriate food.

7. Outside or Inside?

Before your kitten arrives, you need to determine where they’re going to live because this will affect their training. Will they be strictly inside cats? Do you have an enclosed garden where they can play? Remember that a high fence will usually stop a tiny kitten, but a full-grown cat can usually jump over any fence. A good alternative if your garden isn’t enclosed is to take your cat for walks. This means they can get some sunlight and fresh air without you having to worry about their safety. It also means that you will have to start leash training your kitten early.

8. Set up a Safe Space

Every cat has its own unique personality and preferences. Some are very social and love to be around people, others need their own space. Whatever your cat is like, it will need a place where it can retreat, nap, and hide. This can be a cupboard or even the corner of a quiet room. The important part is that your cat knows that it’s safe there. So, set up a designated place and put soft blankets down or a toy it loves. When your cat gets tired or overwhelmed, encourage it to hang out in that space.

9. Establish Good Habits

The habits you establish on the first day will probably continue throughout your kitten’s life. So, continue the way you mean to go on. Designate a sleeping zone and encourage your kitten to sleep there at night. Do the same with the toilet zone. This will help to cut down on messy and smelly accidents.

10. Start Grooming Early

Long haired cats look beautiful, but they need a lot of grooming to stay that way. And you can’t ignore this task unless you want them to end up an ugly, uncomfortable, and matted mess. That’s why it’s best that you start with a grooming program early. Your cat probably won’t need to be bathed, they do this really well without your help, but getting them accustomed to regular brushing or nail trimming will make your life much easier.

11. Get a Cat Health Check

Before you take your new kitten home, make sure they have a vet check. Your vet will be able to tell if they’re in good health and whether they need any immunisations. It’s also important that you talk to your vet about the pet laws in the area you live in. Some cities demand that pets be sterilised or microchipped, so make sure that you’re up to date on the latest laws regarding your new friend.

12. Cats Like Toys Too

It isn’t just dogs that like to play with toys. When you go into a pet store, you will find a dizzying array of toys for cats, and you should seriously think about grabbing some of them. Otherwise, your cat will find their own toys, and you probably won’t like what they choose. They don’t have to be expensive either. Often, the best toy for a new kitten is a string for them to chase. And if the string has a feather on the end of it, it’s even better!

13. Cat Hitchhikers

Fleas are one of the worst things that can happen to a pet owner. Your new kitten may be crawling with them a few days after you get them home or bring them in after meeting a new friend in your garden. And fleas can be nearly impossible to get rid of. They hide in carpet, bed covers, and basically any surface in your house. And just when you think you’ve managed to get rid of them, they pop up again out of nowhere. So, make sure you’re prepared. There are a variety of natural products that will help keep them away as well as stronger solutions, so find one that works for your pet.

14. Cat Toilet Training

Cats are usually much easier to toilet train than dogs are, though if you get a tiny kitten you may have to show them the litter box a few times. Make sure the litter is kept clean and scooped every day because cats are fastidious and will find other places to go if their regular toilet smells bad. Get a tray with a lid if you don’t want to be looking at it all day and watch how your cat reacts to the litter itself. Some cats are picky about which litter they will and will not use, so if your cat is reluctant than try another type and see how it goes.

15. Pet Insurance

Pet insurance isn’t always cheap, but it can save your pet’s life and your bank balance if something goes wrong. So, make sure you check through your options and buy a policy that suits your needs and life circumstances before you commit to a furry friend.

16. Scratching Posts

Cats like to scratch. Given the chance, they will scratch your shoes, handbag, carpet, couches, or the legs of your dining room chairs. Avoiding this assault on your possessions is easier if you give them something good to scratch and then gently teach them to use it. Which is why one of your first purchases should be a good scratching post.

17. Bribing your Cat

Training a cat isn’t like training a dog. Some cats will resist training no matter what you try. Others will walk on a leash with some bribery. It really depends on your cat. But no matter what type of cat personality you end up with, bribes always help. So, make sure that you stock up on catnip or cat treats for when you really need your cat to do something.

18. Make Time for Play

Cats like to play almost as much as dogs. And playing with your new kitten is a great way to bond, to get to know them, and to burn off some of that excess energy so they aren’t bouncing off the walls. You don’t need expensive toys to play with a cat. Try dragging a piece of string around and encourage them to chase it. Or get a paper bag and watch them ‘kill it’. Cats love to invent their own games, so just make sure they aren’t playing with something that could hurt them and enjoy the time together.

If you’re ready for your first feline friend, then be prepared for year of laughter, cuddles, and the unique pleasure of cuddling a soft, purring cat on cold nights!

Fat cats may look cute and cuddly, but they are not healthy cats. As obesity in humans rises, so has obesity in our pets. The biggest culprit is overfeeding, with unlimited access to high energy dry foods a key factor. There are a number of health conditions associated with obesity in cats:

Feline Diabetes

Overweight cats are more likely to develop feline diabetes. If caught early, feline diabetes is curable with weight loss and dietary management. Feline diabetes is a difficult condition to manage long term as treatment requires twice daily insulin injections.

Joint Issues

Carrying around extra weight places increased stress on joints. This can lead to painful early arthritis and joint damage

Coat matting/skin issues

Obese cats often cannot groom themselves as well as smaller cats. In long-haired animals this can lead to matting around the belly and rear end. Matting and dirty coats create an ideal environment for bacterial overgrowth and infection.

Reduced Play

The bigger a cat gets, the lazier a cat becomes. It takes more effort for a fat cat to run around and play, so many obese animals will choose to sleep instead. There is nothing wrong with a sleepy cat- but activity and play are important for a cat’s mental health. Stimulated active cats are mentally healthier cats. Active cats are less prone to anxiety and anxiety related issues such as urinary tract disease, chronic vomiting, and bacterial/viral infections.

How Can I help my cat lose weight?

Weight loss should be very very slow in cats. Fat cats who lose weight rapidly are at risk of a deadly liver condition called hepatic lipidosis. Make an appointment with your veterinarian to discuss your cat’s ideal weight and the best method to achieve this.

Diarrhoea is a very common health complaint in cats and kittens. Diarrhoea can range from the occasional ‘soft serve ice-cream’ poo to explosive watery faeces. It is important to monitor your cat’s toileting habits daily to gain an understanding of their ‘normal’ poo, and to identify when problems occur.

Types of diarrhoea: large vs small bowel

Diarrhoea can often be classified as either small or large bowel in origin.

Small Bowel Diarrhoea

Liquid appearance, may be explosive

No mucus, black digested blood may be present

Variation in colour

Increased frequency of toileting

Large Bowel Diarrhoea

Soft serve to cow pat appearance

Mucus or red blood may be present

Light to dark brown in colour

Normal to increased frequency of toileting

Occasionally both small and large bowel signs are present, this suggests that the cause of diarrhoea is affecting the entire gastrointestinal tract.

Causes of diarrhoea

There are many different causes of diarrhoea. Younger cats and kittens are prone to infectious causes of diarrhoea. Older cats are more likely to suffer from inflammatory bowel conditions or cancer. Some causes of diarrhoea include infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, protozoa or parasites), inflammatory bowel disease, food allergy or food hypersensitivity and some cancers.

What happens at the vet:

You should take your cat to the vet if he/she has diarrhoea. During the visit your vet will question you on the history of your cat, including diet, worming regimen and other signs of illness. A complete examination will be performed which may include a rectal examination.

Samples and pictures of diarrhoea are always helpful when making a diagnosis. If you decide to bring a sample to the vet try to collect it as close to the appointment time as possible.

Based on their findings in consult your vet may recommend further testing be performed, which may include faecal testing for infectious causes, blood testing, x-rays or ultrasound.

Treatment

Treatment of diarrhoea varies according to cause. Severe cases of diarrhoea may require an overnight hospital stay and IV fluid therapy to maintain hydration. In mild cases diarrhoea can be managed at home. If your vet suspects an infectious cause to the diarrhoea, he/she may prescribe antibiotics for you to give. You may be advised to feed your cat a prescription gastrointestinal food or prepare a bland home diet such as boiled chicken and mashed pumpkin. Closely adhere to any instructions your veterinarian may give you with regards to feeding and medicating.

In all cases of diarrhoea, staying hydrated is extremely important. Ensure that your kitty has access to plenty of fresh water. Encourage water intake where you can. You can do this by providing different types of water containers (ceramic, glass, plastic) in private locations around the house. Mixing some water into food may also help maintain hydration.

When you board your kitty at our cattery, we monitor your felines feces, to ensure they are healthy and comfortable.

Why is My Cat Not Using The Litter Tray?

It’s been a long day at work and you come home to find a little present on the carpet- or bed- from your feline friend. No, this isn’t a sign that your kitty is mad at you. Nor is he/he having a little practical joke. Inappropriate toileting is your cat’s way of telling you that something is wrong.

Cats are naturally very clean animals and are taught to use the litter by their mothers from a young age. Toileting outside the litter tray is highly unusual behaviour and a sign that it is time for your kitty to visit the vet.

Causes of Inappropriate defaecation

Causes of inappropriate urination

– stress

– diarrhoea

– arthritis

– stress

– stress induced cystitis

– UTI

– Natural spraying by undesexed males

What happens at the vet visit?

Physical exam

Your vet will perform a thorough physical examination to check for any underlying disease. Some causes of inappropriate toileting such as arthritis will be evident on physical exam.

Urine testing

Your vet will likely require a urine sample for further diagnosis. Urinalysis allows your vet to determine the functionality of the kidneys as well as assess bladder health. This may involve taking an on the spot sample with a needle or sending you home with special litter to collect a sample and bring in later.

Urinalysis involves scanning urine for the presence of blood, crystals, bacteria and inflammatory cells. Testing also allows your vet to measure the concentration of urine, pH, glucose and ketone levels. If a bacterial infection is found your vet may suggest sending the urine to a laboratory to culture and identify the bacteria to aid their choice in antibiotics.

Additional testing

Your veterinarian may suggest additional testing such as blood tests, ultrasonography or CT depending on the history of your cat and their findings on physical exam.

Stressy cat? Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (Stress Induced Cystitis) may be the cause.

Cats are very sensitive animals and are easily affected by stress. The most common way that stress presents itself in cats is inappropriate toileting habits. Cats are creatures of habit and anything which varies in their usual routine can be a source of stress. Moving, a new cat in the environment, new people in the house and even new furniture may cause a cat to stress.

It is common for a highly stressed cat to present with idiopathic cystitis. Idiopathic cystitis is inflammation of the lining of the bladder of unknown cause. Cats affected by this disorder will commonly urinate outside the litter tray. Urine may contain small spots of blood and your cat may appear to strain or be in pain when he/she urinates.

At a vet visit your vet will likely request a urine sample and/or trial therapy with an anti-inflammatory. Idiopathic cystitis is not caused by bacterial infection, if no bacteria is found on urinalysis antibiotic therapy is unnecessary. Your vet will also suggest ways to reduce stress in the household including:

Provision of more litter trays- one tray per cat plus one on opposite sides of the house

Separation of feeding areas of litter areas

Providing ‘safe’ places to hide in the house away from children and other animals

Spraying the feline synthetic relaxing hormone ‘Feliway’ around the house

Separating water bowls from food

Many Sydney pet owners choose cat holiday boarding for peace of mind while they’re away.
Remember: cats may seem independent, but they still need human interaction and monitoring. Leaving them home alone for days, even with an automatic feeder, isn’t ideal. Reliable cat boarding services provide far safer, more engaging conditions.

Is It Better to Put a Cat in a Cattery or Leave Them at Home?

This is a question many pet owners ask. While staying at home sounds familiar, cats can become lonely or anxious when left without supervision, particularly if you’re away for more than a couple of days.

Choosing a cattery ensures your cat has round-the-clock attention, consistent feeding schedules, and quick access to a vet if needed.
For cats that need medication or special dietary management, or for elderly or nervous cats, cat boarding is almost always the best option.
Is It Stressful for a Cat to Be Boarded?

Any change can cause mild stress in cats, but the key lies in how their new environment is managed.
